My Top Ten!
Chelone glabra
'bicolor' form, from Meigs Co. Ohio

This plant is so freaking cool! The flowers are photosensitively bicolor. Whichever part of the flower receives the most sunlight is purple, the rest is white. I've never seen anything quite like it!

Aquilegia 'Blazing Stars'

This hybrid has declined in my garden in recent years, so I have to take good care this season (2017) not to lose it. And to propagate as many seeds as possible.

It seems to have disappeared from commerce so it may be impossible for me to replace if I do lose it.

Silphium albiflorum

Native to central Texas I am blown away that this perennial sunflower relative is cold hardy for me in Ohio. And it has started self-seeding! I couldn't be happier.

Spiranthes cernua odorata 'Chadds Ford'

One of my few orchids, this late-blooming species signifies the end of the season in my garden. I used to be perplexed by its late bloom-time, but I guess it knows what it's doing.

Iris tridentata

The latest blooming iris species in my collection, this one usually starts in late June and goes until mid July. I especially love that this patriotic plant from the USA blooms on the 4th of July!

Physocarpus opulifloius

I guess the fact I have about 12 different accessions of this species means I must like it. LOL! It's also one of the most popular natives in the nursery trade.

It does have the annoying habit of having branches that die back, so pruning is a frequent necessity.

Opuntia humifusa
(possibly, O. cespitosa)

The Eastern prickly pear is one of the only cactus species native to my region. And boy is it a ham when it comes to bloom season. Just look at these flowers!

Manfreda virginica

This weird widlflower is sometimes called the false aloe. It is actually related to Agave and Polianthes (aka: tuberose) both of with which it will hybridize. It is one of my project plants in this regard.

Passiflora lutea

Another one of my project plants is the native yellow passionflower. I've tried several times to cross it with other Decaloba species, but to no avail.

Passiflora incarnata

The showier cousin to the yellow passionflower is this guy. It's an aggressive thug, but what a beauty!!! And it's a great host for insects.
